The Constitutio Criminalis Theresiana of 1769 prescribes streaching on an inclined ladder. The victim's shoulders were dislocated and the flanks and arm-pits were burnt with a torch. If the victim, paralized, with his shoulders destroyed and moribund, had nevertheless still not confessed, the court was obligated to recognize his or her innocence.
